Psychedelic lifer Jeffrey Alexander has been floating around the musical cosmos for some time now, racking up a Discogs entry certain to crash your browser. We’re talking a slew of solo releases, a stack of collaborations, and membership of crews such Jackie-O Motherfucker, Dire Wolves, and The Iditarod, cropping up on the likes of Feeding Tube, Cardinal Fuzz, K-RAA-K, and Astral Editions. On top of this he’s been an arts venue programming director, booking agent, record label owner, FM radio disc jockey, tour manager, espresso bar cafe owner, and curator of several international music festivals such as Terrastock. He’s deep in it, you understand?
His latest outfit, The Heavy Lidders, takes his long-form inclinations and repoints them in the direction of song, but the journey is still totally freaked out. Fuzzed-up jams weave through a tangled maze of dusty country, rattling blues, and liquid psyche, with a healthy dose of free jazz skronk as the Thesian string guiding us to the end. The band have made a habit of collaborating, and in that spirit it’s an extra joy that they’ll be joined by Christina Carter of Charlambides on lead vocals, pulling them into deeper, noisier, and more intense territory.
