MODERN NATURE
Over the past 7 or so years (is it really such a short time?) Modern Nature have quietly built a wonderous and extensive body of work drawing on the natural world, improvisation, the weight of conciousness, subtle interplay, and chance occurances. Based around sparse, elegant songwriting, their digestion and recapitulation of folk music, free improv, kosmische, and the understated end of indie guitar has resulted in a series of essential, mindful records that gently envelop and nourish. For 2025’s “The Heat Warps”, the core trio of Jack Cooper, Jeff Tobias, and Jim Wallis have been augmented by dynamite improvising guitairist, Tara Cunningham. Perhaps counterintuitively the resulting record is Modern Nature’s most direct to date, and one of the outstanding releases of last year, with a low-key focus and approachability that is irresitible and undeniable.

DUNWICH BELLS
Interweaving, chiming (of course) guitars, with the occasional muffled drum machine, courtesy of 2/5 of Fuzzy Lights. Early sounds might start you off along a Dean McPhee, John Martyn, or Yo La Tengo tip, whilst not really sounding like any of those. It’s all undulating, contemplative, gentle head-nodders thus far, and deeply satisfying with it.
