OR SOBRE BLAU
Previously we had thought of the combination of experimental pop auteur Kiran Leonard and noise artist Andreu G. Serra, aka Ubaldo, to be a bit of a surprise. Now, two albums in, Or Sobre Blau make perfect sense whilst still maintaining an essential dynamic tension – and all this despite not playing together for over half a decade. Where their first album, The Piri Piri Samplers, was a collage-like cut up of loose jams and improvisations, follow-up Making Friends is a highly considered collection of back-and-forth melodies, saturated drone, unexplained percussive sounds, and widely sourced vocals. An exploration of their relationships with loved ones and with each other, Leonard and Serra draw influence from Bill Orcutt, David Grubbs, The Pastels, Richard Thompson, and magic realism as they wind vermicular sonic strands into a lush lattice of dense abstractions that can burst out into expanses of dazzling radiance at any moment. Ultimately, Or Sobre Blau is a celebration of a rich and relentless friendship between two relentlessly creative spirits, and one which they want to welcome you into.
