THE HORSE LOOM
The Horse Loom is the name given to the music made by Northumbrian singer and guitarist Steve Malley, who you might best know as the driving force of the corruscating power trio The Unit Ama. Malley’s solo work sits adjacent, but somewhat in opposition, to his band output – adding his work with intense post-hardcore bands Crane and Four Frame.
Channelling the same extended, exploratory, on-the-edge quality of his guitarwork through an acoustic setting, he uses this to frame a portfolio of truly extraordinary songs that combine mysticism with a very rooted, earthy reality. Added to that his rich, unaffected voice and you have something unique and special, and which has made The Horse Loom a word-of-mouth phenomenon to compare with fellow Tynesiders Richard Dawson and Nev Clay.

RACHEL WATKINS
More usually seen fronting Cambridge doom-folk quintet Fuzzy Lights, Rachel is a singer and violinist who draws on the folklore and mythology of England to create beguiling and haunting dronesongs. Combining hazy string loops with ungraspable vocal tones she conjures up curious zones that host tales and tunes that feel like they should have already been archived at Cecil Sharp House.
THE DOOZER
It’s been a fair few years since The Doozer has been in town, and over a decade since that’s been in a duo formation. Can’t escape those comparisons with Syd Barrett, but why fight the complement? What a time to catch up with The Doozer and their perambulatory, lopsided, folk hallucinations and devotionals.
